BATON ROUGE, La. — The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women’s gymnastics team placed second in the NCAA Regional Second Round with a score of 196.900 on Thursday (April 2) at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The finish advanced the Wolverines to Saturday’s regional final, its first since 2023.
No. 7 Stanford also advanced after winning the session with a 197.175. No. 22 North Carolina placed third overall with a 196.250, and Utah State placed fourth with a 195.750.
In a meet that came down to the last rotation, U-M scored a 49.150 on the uneven bars behind a team-best 9.850 from Sophie Parenti in the fifth spot. Michigan recorded four scores of 9.900 on floor exercise, with three coming consecutively from Carly Bauman, Sophia Diaz and Quincy Walters. Reyna Guggino stuck her vault landing for a 9.900 in the third rotation.
Michigan finished the first rotation with a score of 49.075, behind a team-high 9.900 from Bauman, while Kayli Boozer notched a 9.825 in the fifth spot. North Carolina, Stanford and Utah State were in a three-way tie ahead of the Wolverines with matching scores of 49.100.
U-M took over the lead in the second rotation, recording three straight scores of 9.900 on floor from Diaz, Bauman and Walters, while Parenti and Jahzara Ranger bookended the rotation with 9.850s. Michigan scored a 49.400 at the halfway point to bring its running total to 98.475 and lead the field. Stanford sat in second with a 98.427, and Utah State was in third with a 98.100, while North Carolina rounded out the group with a 97.900.
Michigan dropped into second following the vault. Guggino put up a huge 9.900 to carry the Wolverines. However, U-M had to count scores of 9.750 and 9.725 to head to the final rotation with a running score of 147.450. Stanford, which had a running score of 147.625, sat in the top spot just in front of UNC, which had a 147.125. Utah State dropped into fourth with a 147.025 through three rotations.
Diaz nailed her uneven bars routine with a 9.875, while Bauman scored a 9.825. Simultaneously battling for the final spot in the regional final, UNC posted a 9.825 and a 9.900 on vault to remain in close contention with the Wolverines. A 9.850 with a stuck landing in the fifth spot secured Michigan’s advancement to the regional final, as North Carolina had back-to-back scores below 9.800 and finished third overall.
U-M will compete for a trip to Fort Worth, Texas, at the NCAA Regional Final on Saturday (April 4) at 5 p.m. CT in Baton Rouge, La. The meet will be streamed live on ESPN+.
