Environment Canada expecting 20 millimetres of rain as thunderstorm watch issued across Southern Interior

UPDATE: 7:18 p.m.

Environment Canada has updated its severe thunderstorm watch to cover areas around Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton and Osoyoos, but is no longer showing the warning for the Kootenays and Merritt area.

In an update posted after 6 p.m., Environment Canada said thunderstorms bringing showers of up to 20 millimetres of rainfall and 70 kilometre per hour winds is expected to move across the Southern Interior overnight and early Friday morning.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in place for much of the Southern Interior tonight.

The advisory from Environment Canada encompasses a large swath of area around Kelowna, Merritt, Princeton, Grand Forks and Cranbrook areas.

Environment Canada says conditions this evening are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing heavy rain.

“Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain,” the alert reads.
