Recently I had the privilege of attending Pop Culture Expo Supernova at Perth’s Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Supernova is an event where hundreds of comic book sellers, knickknack vendors, costume stores, artists and more spruik their wares to cosplayers – people dressed in detailed, often homemade, costumes – and super fans who are also attending panels manned by celebrities, getting their autographs, or simply catching up with friends.
While an event heavily dominated by local artist businesses, I have noticed the rise of products being sold that contain – very clearly – AI generated art.
In an era where AI is threatening big budget artists and films, it is also threatening the small.
We as consumers have a responsibility to not buy and create a market for such products – products which, really, are the opposite of art and what it stands for.
So I say to those thinking of selling, or buying, AI-generated art: think carefully, because you are buying into the destruction of not only other human’s creativity, but also your own.
