Gavin Newsom Calls Trump’s Election Security Speech ‘The Ramblings of a Mad King’
California Gov. Gavin Newsom sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s Thursday primetime address on election security, calling it the “ramblings of a mad king” in a 53-second video posted to X. Newsom accused Trump of spreading falsehoods designed to undermine public confidence in the 2026 midterm elections before a single vote is cast.
In the speech, Trump declassified documents he said revealed “shocking” vulnerabilities in voting machines and alleged Chinese interference in his 2020 loss to former President Joe Biden. An Associated Press analysis found little new information in the released documents, noting that some were so heavily redacted that their findings were difficult to determine.
Newsom argued that while foreign election interference is a legitimate concern, the content of Trump’s address amounted to “make-believe,” and he suggested the speech made a “legitimate” case for invoking the 25th Amendment to remove a president unable to discharge the duties of the office. He also accused Trump of trying to “rig the election before one vote was cast.”
Newsom, widely seen as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential contender, has emerged as one of Trump’s most prominent critics. Some Republican lawmakers have also expressed concern that revisiting unproven 2020 fraud allegations could overshadow the party’s legislative agenda heading into the midterms.
