Man accused of striking off-duty deputy’s motorcycle in Florida

ISLAMORADA, Fla. —

A West Palm Beach resident is in jail following a crash with an off-duty deputy in the Florida Keys.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced on Sunday, Aug. 2 that 39-year-old Thomas D. Carlevale was arrested on Saturday, Aug. 1.

Carlevale is facing charges of DUI, assault on a law enforcement officer, and threatening to kill a law enforcement officer.

The sheriff’s office said it responded to a gas station near mile marker 82 in Islamorada at 12:48 a.m. on Saturday.

Carlevale allegedly struck an off-duty deputy’s motorcycle then fled the scene.

No injuries were reported.

The sheriff’s office said witnesses reported multiple near collisions caused by Carlevale’s erratic driving as well as his aggressive behavior toward arresting deputies, including making threats to kill.

Carlevale was arrested on U.S. 1 in Key Largo and taken to the Monroe County Jail. His first court appearance is scheduled for August 19.
