In the beauty of nature: Colors, patterns, textures inspire design at every turn

While George and Amal Clooney and luxury resorts such as the Patricia Urquoila-designed Il Sereno hotel get most of the buzz in Lake Como, Italy, in the design world, the region is most known for its textiles, particularly silk.

Every spring, the city welcomes textile editors to Proposte, an international exposition held across the lake at Villa Erba in Cernobbio.

In addition, a design festival — actually the fifth annual — takes place at Lake Como. This year’s theme: Historia Naturalis, by Pliny the Elder, who was born there 2,000 years ago.

The choice of theme was well-played, as nature themes and biophilia are sizzling in all aspects of home design.

The festival featured nature interpretations that evoked conversations between architecture, history, design and art, vintage to current, in all media. All were staged in historic venues, such as the 18th-century Villa Olmo: elegant palazzos staged with amazing exposition and furnishings.

From textiles to photography, crafts such as ceramics and furniture, the presentation was a revelation.
