The comment section of Health Minister Mark Butler’s social media post about Women’s Health Week has been overrun by commenters asking the minister, “What is a woman?”
Mr Butler posted on Facebook, “It’s Women’s Health Week ask your health questions below”, alongside an emoji of a finger pointing to the comment section.
Dozens of social media users took the opportunity to leave a question for the minister.
“What is a woman?” one user asked.
“Why are there males in female-only spaces including sports, change rooms and prisons?”
Another user asked the same thing: “What’s a woman?”
“Why does the government ignore males dominating female girls on football ovals? And forcing girls off an oval so the boys can play?” asked a third.
Another commenter questioned Mr Butler about Labor’s stance on breastfeeding.
“Does your department support natal males attempting to induce lactation for the purposes of simulating breastfeeding with an infant?” they asked.
In August, Mr Butler announced the Albanese government was investing $18.1 million to support projects that improve the health and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ Australians.
“The program will establish a national voluntary training and accreditation scheme to support primary care providers to deliver safe, inclusive and affirming care for LGBTIQA+ people,” Mr Butler said.
$10 million was assigned to La Trobe University to deliver a program called “Portable” to help LGBTIQA+ people find “accessible healthcare that is safe, respectful and inclusive”.
The remaining $8.1 million was to be awarded as grants to 18 initiatives for national and state-based projects.
“These grants will give LGBTIQA+ people better access to the health information and care they need, improving outcomes and communities,” he said.
Six hours after posting the original call to action, Mr Butler has not answered any of the questions.
