Hamilton’s newest antique shop holds many hidden gems. The Depot Antique Gallery, located at 13 Lebanon St., features antiques, fine art, collectibles and vintage items that are perfect for making any on-campus dorm a home. It is a must-visit spot for anyone looking for their next “Where-did-you-find-that?” trinket or homeware. 
In contrast to the rushed, impersonal feel of shopping in a commercial retail store, second-hand shopping offers a distinct sense of serenity and connection. These stores offer college students an appealing alternative to disposable consumer culture. Antique shopping encourages us to slow down, notice unique traits and choose something with intention.
The Depot’s rustic aroma of cedar and book pages complements the delicate shelved items and plays against the vibrant movie posters and funky couch cushions. At the front and center of the store are superhero figurines, comic books and memorabilia. The walls are lined with delicate glass and dishware, vinyl records and jewelry pieces.  
The Depot also features locally produced home essentials, such as infused oils, natural soaps and scented candles, giving shoppers a sensory-packed experience that allows them to imagine the pieces they browse in their own homes. The Depot is a standout example of the beauty of a tight-knit local business. 
Selfishly, my favorite discovery at The Depot was a vibrant set of ceramic teacups and matching saucers, priced at $22 each. They matched a collection of plates and bowls nearby, and I immediately pictured how bright they would make my house. I did not know who had owned them before me or where they had spent their previous years. Still, imagining the possibilities was part of the appeal. If I brought them home, they would become part of my story and my housemates’.
After tearing myself away from browsing the three-for-ten-dollar book deal, I realized how easy it was to lose track of time in a store with no agenda, no shopping list and no expectation of finding anything in particular. That is the charm of antique shopping: the best finds are often the ones you were not looking for.
As antique stores tend to do, the story told by the items available at The Depot Antique Gallery changes daily. Each specific piece carries a story and history, and every new owner adds a chapter.
