CICERO N.Y. — Aerial spraying to reduce mosquito populations is scheduled for tonight, Monday, August 4, after 6:30 p.m., in and around the Cicero Swamp area, weather permitting. This urgent response follows confirmation that mosquitoes collected in the area tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEEV) and West Nile virus (WNV). Samples were collected from traps on Island Road, East Taft Road, and Route 298.
If weather or wind conditions are unfavorable tonight, the spraying will be rescheduled for the next suitable evening. Residents will be notified via local media, social media, and the 911 emergency alert system.
The spray area is bounded by Route 31 to the north, Northern Boulevard to the west, Taft Road to the south, and Chittenango Creek (county line) to the east. Specific roads affected include all or parts of Route 298, Bull Street, Eastwood Road, Island Road, Cicero Center Road, Fergerson Road, Ferstler Road, and Oxbow Road.
Residents in the spray area are advised to stay indoors and close windows for at least one hour after spraying. Pets should be brought inside if possible, and outdoor gardens should be covered with produce rinsed before eating. Toys, furniture, and clothes should be brought inside from outdoor lines. Window A/C units should be set to recirculate indoor air, while central air is safe to use. Car windows and vents should be closed if driving through the spray zone, and drones or aerial devices should not be operated.
The pesticide being used is Kontrol 30-30, registered with the EPA and NYS Department of Environmental Conservation for mosquito control. A copy of the label is available at ongov.net/health or by calling 315-435-1649.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by signing up for emergency alerts via text, wireless, or TTY through the Hyper-Reach Emergency Notification System. Landlines are automatically included.
