Black Dandyism: Defining personhood and politics

It’s the world’s fanciest dress party. Tomorrow, the stars will line the red carpet for the Met Gala. Wearing incredible and outlandish haute couture to raise money for the Costume Institute.

This year, the theme is Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, based on the academic text Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, by Monica Miller.

Guest:

Jonathan Michael Square, Assistant Professor of Black Visual Culture at Parsons School of Design and advisor to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition ‘Superfine’: Tailoring Black Style
