Celebrate Lunar New Year | State Library of Queensland

Experience Lunar New Year through performance and play, with Zodiac inspired ink rubbings and storytelling on Monday 16 February and the rhythmic energy of a traditional lion dance on Saturday 21 February.

Play Matters Chinese Mandarin Playgroup: Lunar New Year Celebration 
Monday 16 February, 2pm – 3:30pm 

Step into the magic of Lunar New Year and celebrate the Year of the Horse through movement, music, and creativity. From drumming rhythms and lion dance movement to crafting Zodiac animal rubbings, children are invited to explore and create together, culminating in a lively community dragon parade where everyone plays a part!

Lion’s Lore 
Saturday 21 February 10am – 10:30am 

Feel the roar, rhythm, and power of the lion. Get ready to welcome Red Dragon Martial Arts for a special Lunar New Year lion dance performance! Watch the vibrant lions leap and sway to the powerful beat of the drums, bringing luck and prosperity for the year ahead. After the performance, get up close to the lion puppets, experiencing its movement, texture, and personality in an unforgettable way. This bold and immersive performance celebrates the sound, spectacle, and cultural tradition of lion dance.
