A Minecraft Movie star Jason Momoa is headlining yet another video game adaptation, and it is safe to say that he won’t be fighting blocky monsters this time around. As Sony continues to mine through their iconic properties for adaptations, the latest project is based on a relatively recent best-selling title that has captivated players throughout the world. Those wanting a new Starship Troopers film may have finally found the perfect project to scratch that itch.

Deadline reports that Jason Momoa has been tapped to star in the upcoming film adaptation of Helldivers for director Justin Lin (Fast Five). The PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures film is set to hit theaters on Nov. 10, 2027. Based on the video game franchise that started in 2015, the series became a worldwide sensation when Helldivers 2 released to widespread acclaim in 2024. The action-packed sci-fi adventure features players teaming up to complete missions on alien planets, spreading “freedom” by eliminating dangerous enemies and creatures, which span from terminator-like robots to giant space bugs.

Like the plot entails, Helldivers was heavily inspired by Starship Troopers, a 1997 sci-fi action film that has become a cult classic. One big satire about fascism and the military, the video game takes cues from Paul Verhoeven’s work while putting its own unique spin on the concept. In Helldivers, groups of three players team up to protect “Super Earth” from alien forces on distant planets, eradicating everything in their path with special weapons and equipment. Known for its intense, action-packed gameplay, it would not be shocking if Lin’s movie attempts to balance the hardship of its “heroes” while acknowledging the satirical nature of the material.

In addition to Helldivers, Jason Momoa is slowly but surely becoming a mainstay in the video game adaptation scene. He most recently played Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison in A Minecraft Movie, one of the surprise box office hits of 2025 with $961 million grossed worldwide. Based on one of the most popular video game franchises ever created, the film sits just below The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.3 billion) on the all-time video game movie list. Despite mediocre reviews from critics, audiences ate up the pop culture sensation, with Warner Bros. wasting no time in greenlighting a sequel from director Jared Hess featuring Momoa and the rest of the original cast.

Momoa is not stopping anytime soon, as he also has a role lined up in this fall’s highly anticipated Street Fighter film. He is set to play Blanka, a hulking green monster from the popular video game franchise. Compared to his lead roles in Minecraft and Helldivers, Momoa seems to have a much smaller supporting part in Street Fighter. Still, it is clear that Momoa has a penchant for video game adaptations, including unmade ones like Just Cause, which has been in development hell for the past decade.
