Members of the House Civil Justice & Claims Subcommittee visited the Supreme Court for its scheduled meeting on February 4. They heard remarks from Chief Justice Carlos Muñiz and had an opportunity for questions and answers with the head of Florida’s judicial branch.
Emilie Rietow, education and information administrator, provided a building tour and information about the operations of state courts, the history of the building, and offerings at the Supreme Court. Rietow’s outreach efforts on behalf of the Supreme Court include scheduled tours for more than 13,000 student and adult groups, just like the experience offered to legislators.
House members expressed gratitude for the opportunity to see the Supreme Court building and its features – including the room where justices deliberate in Court conference. Library staff, including Librarian Teresa Farley and Archivist Jacklyn Attaway, highlighted the research conducted on behalf of justices, the material available to the public, and showed off some of the library’s most treasured documents and artifacts.
“The majority of the makeup of our subcommittee is non-lawyers,” said Chair Traci Koster. She added the aim of the visit for members was “just getting an idea of what the court does… the difference between the judicial branch and the legislative branch and giving them the experience of seeing the courtroom.”
A video of the visit is available from The Florida Channel.
