MAYOR CANTRELL CONTINUES THE CITY’S MEETING PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE INITIATIVE, WILL TRAVEL TO ATTEND U.S. CONFERENCE OF MAYORS 92ND WINTER MEETING IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell today will travel to Washington D.C. to attend the 92nd Winter Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) taking place Jan. 17-19, 2024.

“Attending this year’s Winter Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) presents multiple opportunities to meaningfully engage and hear directly from hundreds of my brother and sister mayors on the biggest issues impacting cities of all sizes,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “The support and shared experiences of mayors is a much-needed resource that federal officials lean on to understand what is happening on the ground in real time. Particularly during these unprecedented times, it is important that mayors come together to discuss and analyze ways in which we can make our cities more equitable through infrastructure improvements, crime prevention, workforce development programs, mental health initiatives and addressing our increased challenges presented by climate change. I am excited to build on our partnerships at the local, state and federal level through the U.S. Conference of Mayors and look forward to sharing ideas and resources and develop solutions to meet the needs of our people.”

On Monday, Jan. 15, Mayor Cantrell continued the City’s “meeting people where they are” initiative by joining the Archbishop, City Councilmembers, community leaders and community groups to lead the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March.

Mayor Cantrell’s remarks, inspired by Dr. King’s multiple meetings in New Orleans to support the New Orleans Civil Rights Movement, focused on the continued pursuit of equality, love and respect for all people and a call to action that every resident can be a light on the pathway of progress to strive for the best of New Orleans.

The City’s “meeting people where they are” initiative will also be the City’s platform as Mayor Cantrell travels today, Jan. 16, to attend the USCM 92nd Winter Meeting in Washington, D.C.

The annual USCM Winter Meeting in Washington D.C. is an essential meeting to attend by mayors from across the country because the primary focus is for mayors to engage together, “because cities are stronger together,” and to bring city priorities and future growth concepts directly to U.S. congressional leaders and the White House.

Upon Mayor Cantrell’s return to New Orleans on Saturday, Jan. 20, planning will continue for Mayor Cantrell’s next series of school visits, meeting students where they are to hear their concerns and support ideas coming from the next generation.

The week of Jan. 22, Mayor Cantrell will participate in Carnival events, including honoring several Mardi Gras krewes.
