MJF Addresses Possibility Of Working For WWE Prior To Re-Signing With AEW

MJF has discussed how likely a jump to WWE could have been.

Making his shock return to the company at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view, the former World Champion picked up where he left off as he took out Adam Cole before cutting a lenghty promo in front of the Las Vegas crowd. Confirming that he would be remaining with AEW for the foreseeable future, MJF’s commitment was more than just his word and a signature as he revealed that he had the company logo tattooed on his leg.

Throughout 2023, Maxwell Jacob Friedman repeatedly made reference to “The Bidding War of 2024” and claimed that he had no allegiances to any promotion and would go wherever the money was the highest. Although Fightful Select reported that the AEW star actually signed a new deal back in 2022 and this was why the storyline was eventually dropped, was WWE ever an actual option?

Speaking with Sports Illustrated, Friedman stated that it was an option but did not disclose any more details, adding that AEW is paying him handsomely:

“Of course there was,” said Friedman. “Am I going to get into the weeds? No. At this point in time, this move made the most sense for me.

“I’m making a ton of f—— money. As far as when the contract ends, that’s nobody’s business but my own.”

Later in the interview, MJF was asked about his name being chanted when Triple H made an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show and made infamous comments about wrestlers who did not want to sign with WWE as they were afraid of “The grind”, to which Friedman responded as follows:

“Cody Rhodes is a mentor of mine,” said Friedman. “I f—— love the guy. I love the Rhodes-a-coaster. But when Triple H is doing an interview on one of the biggest sports shows, whose name were they cheering in the background? My name. I’m not just the biggest star in AEW. I’m one of the biggest stars in the history of the f—— business.”

MJF set to make triumphant return

Having previously made a surprise appearance at the recent pay-per-view, the former World Champion has yet to appear live on AEW TV in 2024. This will change on June 5th as MJF’s return promo is one of many segments announced for the upcoming episode of AEW Dynamite.
