Future has been relevant for over a decade and has released many tracks during his career. In fact, he has released over 70 singles and has landed on the Billboard Hot 100 numerous times. However, he has made more than drug music and club anthems.
Many would see Future as a producer of relatively uninspiring music and a rapper with very little substance. Still, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have intentions when he goes into the studio. With his 2014 project, Honest, Future had a lot of aims, and, as a new father, he was at a crossroads in his life.
The album, which was his sophomore effort, was a 12-track body of work, and the deluxe version saw Future gift fans an extra six songs. But during an interview with Billboard, he admitted that, despite making tracks like ‘Move That Dope’ and ‘Karate Chop’, he unveiled that he put a lot of heart into making Honest.
He told the publication that one of his intentions was to get introspective with fans, stating, “I’m just trying to reflect on how to make myself better, how to become a better man, a better father, a better person, a better artist. I wanted to touch on subject matter that doesn’t always get touched on.”
During the recording of Honest, Future was engaged to R&B singer Ciara and was awaiting the birth of their son, Future Zahir Wilburn. As such, the then-30-year-old made some songs about love, such as ‘I’ll Be Yours’. However, the forthcoming birth of his child also led him to create songs for the younger generation.
One song that the ‘Tony Montana’ hitmaker wrote in this vein was ‘Blood, Sweat, Tears.’ On the song, Future raps lines such as, “Ayy, this right here, this is a miracle” and “This moment now, this is spiritual,” showing his more emotional side.
While speaking with Billboard, Future explained, “I want to let little kids know that no matter what situation they come up in, that they’re not exempt from success. All I ever wanted was for people to believe in me, and just recognise my potential. I came, I struggled, I made it, I conquered.”
Honest debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and was the last project he released that didn’t debut at number one. Following the release of Honest, Future released DS2, which topped the chart and followed up with Evol in 2016, which also did.
