A celebration of the life of DJ Kulu to be held Tuesday in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s Jazz, Soul, and even Hip Hop scene lost a legend as DJ Kulu passed away at the age of 79 on December 31, 2024. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, January 21 at the Big Top at the AIA Carnival.

Kulu was an artist in every definition of the word. He was born in 1945 and fell in love with Jazz music played at the bars in Wan Chai from a young age. He was a photographer in England for much of the first half of his life before returning to do music in Hong Kong in his 50s. Kulu was at every party worth going to in Hong Kong, and even though his heart was Jazz, he’d come to Hip Hop parties including LiFTED’s Clockenflap Afterparty with RAMENGVRL in the picture above.

As the coolest guy in the party, Kulu was unmissable with his wild facial hair and hat, and his passion was always there for the music. He would DJ Jazz music at Salon 10 and a lot of times bring his camera out to take pictures of the musicians.

Tuesday night’s celebration is for his friends and family members, and those with photo or video contributions are invited to send to [email protected] to be included.

TIckets are available at Eventbright HK here.
