Trending tans are leading to sunburns. Here’s how to treat them
Trends online have people prioritizing a tan over preventing sunburn.“I have a teenage daughter, and so what I do see trending is that I will notice her looking at her phone and going, the UV is a 10 or the UV is 11. They’re reading these UV ratings, and instead of taking it as a cautionary warning and avoiding the sun and putting sunscreen on, instead, she wants to run outside and lay in the sun,” said licensed esthetician Emily Tichy. There’s also the trend of making your own sunscreen, which could be less effective.“Sunscreens are regulated as a drug by the FDA, so any sunscreen has to be tested. They have to put that sunscreen on people and test them under the sun, so it’s not one of those things that you want to mess around with,” said Tichy. If you do get a sunburn, there are a few ways to treat it.“We’re just going to use cool compresses. So, like a moist towel, keep it on the area you want to keep that, get that heat out of the sunburn. And once that heat goes away, you feel a little more comfortable. That’s where we’re going to moisturize,” said Tichy.Aloe vera is another way of cooling down your skin, as long as you moisturize too.“I also recommend you could keep your aloe vera in your refrigerator, so you’re going to get that cooling at the same time,” said Tichy. If your skin starts to peel, it’s probably tempting to get rid of it, but it’s important to leave it alone.“Your peeling skin is a bandage. It’s protecting that baby skin underneath. So, you don’t want to peel that off because that skin isn’t ready to be exposed. So, there’s just the urge to peel it. Don’t pick it. Don’t peel it. Leave it there, because it’s protecting you,” said Tichy.DOWNLOAD the free Gulf Coast News app for your latest news and alerts on breaking news, weather, sports, entertainment, and more on your phone or tablet.
