This winter, the Cohasset Historical Society will take visitors on a fashion timeline survey of winter outerwear and accessories from the 1820s through the 1960s.

Today’s modern lifestyles, along with fashion trends suggests that not everyone possesses warm woolen winter outerwear like those commonly worn in past decades. This was not the case prior to the evolution of modern weatherproof textiles which we have grown accustomed to wearing.

The Society’s newest exhibit features items from its existing costume and textile collection, consisting of nearly 4,000 artifacts as well as three garments generously on loan from the Hingham Historical Society. Highlights of the 35 garments in the upcoming exhibit includes an 1820 silk pelisse (long coat from the Hingham Historical Society), a stunning 1890-1910 Edwardian silk brocade coat with velvet and luxurious braid trim, sumptuous silk velvet coats from the 1920s and 30s, and fun fashions demonstrating the new outerwear styles of the 1960s-70s.

The exhibit will follow the development of outerwear from 19 th century cloaks and capes worn not only for warmth but to accommodate the changing design of women’s dress silhouettes, as well as the effect of cultural events on outerwear fashion, the influence of haute-couture and the emergence and influence of modern designers during the mid-20 th century.

The exhibition opens on December 11, 2023, and runs through March 29, 2024. Regular museum hours are Monday-Friday from 9-1 pm.
