Barrel Jeans and 5 Other Denim Trends That Are Big in 2025
Jeans are probably the hardest working item of clothing in your entire wardrobe. As such, it figures you likely have more than a few pairs (guilty!), but we’d argue there’s always room for more. Especially if you’re wanting to try a different silhouette, wash or style.
Luckily, there are plenty of new 2025 denim trends worth getting excited about this season. While we won’t be parting with our beloved wide-leg jeans or our go-to straight leg styles anytime soon, the spring/summer runways and beyond (hi, street style set) have certainly piqued our interests.
Below, we’ve rounded up the seven best jeans trends we’re seeing everywhere RN, along with some of our top picks of where to shop the looks courtesy of our fave denim brands. Some 2024 denim trends have carried over to this year – barrel jeans, we’re looking at you – so if you have yet to invest in a pair, take this as your sign.
Baggy Bootcut Jeans
Whether your style muse is Bella Hadid fully in her cowgirl era or Kendrick Lamar at the Super Bowl halftime show (we know his jeans were technically flares, but the overall fit and trailing hems nail this trend so stay with us), there’s no denying bootcut jeans have had a major resurgence as of late. A key signifier of the early noughties, the 2025 version has been updated with a slightly looser, baggier fit throughout the thigh, finishing in a slouchy flare that’s crucial to the bootcut silhouette. Typically more of a men’s cut, there’s no need to borrow from the boys anymore.
Jeans, But Make Them Extra
Be it studded seams, embroidered pockets, tactile textures, or crystal embellishment, true blues are making more of an effort per the Chanel and Stella McCartney SS25 runways. It might not be party season, but your jeans will say otherwise. The best part about this trend is the fact you can DIY it. We love the idea of adding patches to the thighs of an old faded pair to give them a new lease of life. However you get in on the look, one thing is for sure: It’s time to say bye-bye to boring denim.
Barrel Leg Jeans
Barrel jeans have many names. Carrot, balloon, tapered leg—however you refer to them, there’s no denying they are the hottest jeans trend around after growing in popularity over the past year. Admittedly, the volume in the leg can be daunting, but it all comes down to how you style them.
You want to balance the proportions, so try tucking in a T-shirt and adding a belt. Keep jackets shorter than the widest part of the jeans, so you don’t lose the shape of the pants. As for footwear, kitten heels and ballet flats both work really well—bonus points if they have pointed toes. Your sneakers and loafers aren’t complete no-gos, but may require a cuff roll if you want to show off a little more ankle.
Distressed jeans
Thanks to the prevalence of quiet luxury, we haven’t seen a lot of distressed denim around as of late. MM6 Maison Margiela’s SS25 show changed that with the brand sending ripped and paint-splattered jeans down the runway. Whether you opt for a small tear here or there, shredded knees, subtle wearing on the back pockets, or the slightest of nods to the trend with raw hems, the look has an easy, laid-back vibe that feels so on point for spring.
Asymmetric waistband jeans
It can be hard to find a truly fresh take on denim, but when Kendall Jenner strutted down the Schiaparelli SS25 runway in a pair of dark wash straight-leg jeans with a dipped front waistband, we sat up a little straighter. Loewe, JW Anderson and Agolde all followed suit, proving it’s a trend worth taking note of. As for the wearability of the look in real life, we’ll be trying a crossover waistband like this GAP pair first and foremost.
Belted jeans
I’ll confess, I initially dismissed this trend as not for me. I had to be persuaded to try on the Levi’s XL straight jeans in store with the promise that the thin denim belt was removable. But when I turned to admire myself in the mirror, I realized it’s actually a chic addition and makes the jeans what they are. I obviously walked out with them, and I’ve had compliments every time I’ve worn them since (which is a lot). It’s the easiest way to add a little interest to a classic pair of jeans.
Jorts
The A-list can keep their micro shorts. This spring and summer, it’s jorts (aka long denim shorts) that are set to reign supreme. Wear now with biker boots and an oversized leather jacket while you wait for the mercury to rise, or mid-calf socks with loafers and a trench coat for a preppy take.
