“Patient safety isn’t just a top priority – it’s central to everything we do,” said Deborah Addo, Penn State Health’s interim CEO, president and chief operating officer. “We are deeply committed to our patients’ well-being and work tirelessly to ensure a safe, secure health care environment. The latest grades from The Leapfrog Group affirm our commitment to this standard.”

Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hampden Medical Center and Lancaster Medical Center each earned the highest distinction with an “A” grade, with Lancaster Medical Center receiving its first-ever rating from Leapfrog for patient safety. Holy Spirit Medical Center and St. Joseph Medical Center each received a “B.”

The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving patient safety. Each spring and fall, Leapfrog assigns grades of A, B, C, D or F to nearly 3,000 general acute-care hospitals nationwide. These grades are based on the evaluation of over 30 publicly available metrics assessing how well hospitals performed in preventing medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections among patients in their care.

“Achieving an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I extend my congratulations to Penn State Health, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for creating a culture where patients come first.”
