Tesla has revealed the pricing for its 500-mile electric semi-truck, and it’s 60 percent higher than what was promised back in 2017.
The Tesla Semi was first unveiled back in 2017, with an advertised starting price of $150,000 for the 300-mile range version and $180,000 for the 500-mile range version.
Large-scale production is only just starting now, with a dedicated page on Tesla’s website.
But there’s one big change – the EV’s cost has jolted up a lot from the price tag promised back in 2017 – and it’s sparked a lot of controversy.

The price for a Tesla Semi has increased a whole lot since 2017
A customer quote, reported to Electrek, has put the price of a Semi at $290,000 – and that’s before destination fees and taxes come into the equation.
This lines up with data from California’s Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP), administered by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
State documents have placed the Tesla Semi at around $260,000 for the Standard Range (325 miles) and $300,000 for the Long Range (500 miles).
If the $290,000 figure is to be believed, this would make it 60 percent higher than the original $180,000.
However, it’d still be cheaper than the industry average for electric semi trucks – class 8 trucks were estimated to be worth around $435,000 on average, according to CARB data.
A class 8 truck would be the heaviest category of commercial vehicle in the US, weighing more than 33,000Ibs.

When can we expect this semi-truck to arrive?
It’s no secret that people have been waiting a while for the Semi to arrive – some guys got so sick of waiting that they started up their own electric truck company in the meantime.
But they say good things come to those who wait.
So what exactly do we have to look forward to?
Well, if this footage of a Semi-truck powering past diesel trucks on a highway is anything to go by, a whole lot of power.
Besides test deliveries made back in late 2022, this truck hasn’t seen much action on the road.
With Elon Musk confirming the Semi is starting high-volume production this year, here’s hoping we see more of them very soon.
