The late 1990s marked a fierce rivalry in professional wrestling, with WWE and WCW battling for supremacy and the best talent in the industry. While Matt and Jeff Hardy eventually solidified their status as icons in WWE’s tag team division, there was a moment when they almost took a different path.
In an episode of “The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy” podcast, Matt Hardy reminisced about the night ECW made its explosive invasion of WWE—an event that found the Hardy brothers still working as extras. Following the show, they crossed paths with wrestling legends Raven, The Blue Meanie, and The Sandman at a nearby restaurant. It was there that a tipsy Sandman attempted to recruit them for ECW.
He said, ‘Hey, are you guys any good? You got any tapes?’ He said, ‘Send me a tape, here’s my address,’ and he couldn’t write it. Raven had to write it down. We got his address and he actually said, ‘I’m serious, send me a tape.’
Seizing the opportunity, the Hardys sent The Sandman tapes showcasing their wrestling skills, which led to a pivotal phone call just days later.
He wanted to bring us into ECW and give us an opportunity to maybe work there. So we were this close to doing something for ECW and maybe working for ECW, but then we signed with WWE just a few weeks later.
