A body found in a Texas creek is believed to be that of Jeremy Neves, a 25-year-old man who went missing almost three months ago.
Back in April, Neves was reported missing by his family to the Abilene Police Department (APD). Weeks later, on Thursday, June 26, his car was discovered submerged in a local creek, and a body matching Neves’ description was found inside the vehicle, according to a press release from the police department.
“The body has been sent for autopsy to confirm identification and determine the cause of death,” the APD said in the release.
“The Abilene Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the Neves family during this difficult time,” authorities added.

According to the APD, “an active investigation was immediately launched” upon Neves’ initial disappearance.
At the time, community members “rallied together and organized multiple search efforts,” including one that was put together by the Rapid Compassion Collective (Rapid CC), which police described as “an out-of-state organization that specializes in locating missing persons using advanced technology.”

Rapid CC ultimately discovered Neves’ vehicle in the water and notified police, per the statement.
PEOPLE reached out to the APD for comment on Saturday, June 28, but did not receive an immediate response.
Neves was last seen leaving the Guitars and Cadillacs bar after 11 p.m. local time on April 3, according to local news outlet KTXS 12.
A GoFundMe has since been established by Neves’ cousin, Shawn Murphy, to assist the family with funeral expenses.
“Jeremy had a child-like spirit and would give the world to anyone,” Murphy wrote on the fundraising page, adding that the family is “devastated” by their loss.
He added that Neves’ mother is “disabled” and on a “fixed income,” and the 25-year-old was one of her “primary caretakers.”
“The money that we are raising will go to fund the funeral and the rest, if any left over, will continue to help his mom to pay bills,” he said.
As of June 28, the GoFundMe has raised over $4,900 of its $7,000 goal.
