The White House launched an official TikTok account on Tuesday, posting a handful of videos featuring President Donald Trump and members of his staff. As of Wednesday, the account had gained more than 155,000 followers and 289,000 likes.
It’s an interesting choice, and many are wondering exactly how they’re doing it, considering that the TikTok app is currently banned on government devices. Trump himself called for a ban on the app during his first term in 2020, and former President Joe Biden signed the current ban into law last year. The Supreme Court has upheld that law, which bans TikTok unless it is sold to an American company, but President Trump has extended the sale deadline more than once.
The White House’s new account has met with a less than stellar reception on the platform, with many users voicing their displeasure with the current administration in the comments.
