The Australian Government is committed to leading the way in Antarctic environmental protection. We strive to continuously improve our environmental stewardship and minimise the environmental impacts of our activities.
As such, and in accordance with our international obligations under the Antarctic Treaty system, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is assessing the environmental impacts of the upcoming Davis Critical Infrastructure Works, which are proposed to occur until 2031.
A draft Initial Environmental Evaluation (IEE): Antarctic Infrastructure Renewal Program – Davis Critical Infrastructure Works has been prepared that considers the potential environmental impacts associated with the proposed Davis Critical Infrastructure Work over the life of the project. The aim of the project is to replace end-of-life water, power and mechanical services operations at Davis station to enable the station to be capable of supporting full station capacity and to continue to deliver world-leading science.
The AAD invites members of the public to submit comments on the draft IEE document. Comments should focus on potential environmental impacts of the proposed activities at Davis Station and/or suggest additional, specific ways to reduce the environmental impacts of the proposed activities.
The closing date for public comment is 5:00pm AEST on 19 April, 2026.
