Arizona Tops No. 7 Texas A&M To Win NB3 Match Play Championship

SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. – The Arizona women’s golf team continued its dominant play this week by defeated No. 7 Texas A&M, 3.5-1.5, to claim the NB3 Match Play Championship at Twin Warriors Golf Club in New Mexico.
 
It marks the fourth tournament win for second-year head coach Giovana Maymon and the first win of the 2025-26 season.
 

After going 2-0 on the first day with wins over New Mexico State (4-1) and New Mexico (5-0), the Wildcats took down the Aggies (3.5-1.5) on Wednesday to win the event with 12.5 points to A&M’s 9.5 points over the two days.
 
Senior Nena Wongthanavimok was the first pairing out for the Wildcats on Wednesday and took a 2-up lead through six holes against Natalie Yen. After Yen tied the match through 12 holes, Wongthanavimok won the par three 13th hole with a birdie to go 1-up and then closed out the match with a birdie on No. 17 to earn the 2&1 victory.
 
The second pairing of the day saw Arizona freshman Kinsley Ni take on Louise Reau and Ni was in a 2-down hole through five holes. But she won the sixth and seventh holes to tie the match and then rattled off wins on 10, 11 and 12 to go 3-up and then closed out the match in style with an eagle on No. 16 to get the 4&2 win.
 

In the third pairing, Texas A&M’s Vanessa Borovilos came away with a 5&4 win over Arizona’s Angela Arora.
 
In the final two matches, the Wildcats just needed a half of a point to secure the tournament win.
 
Charlotte Back was taking on Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio and neither golfer had a lead larger than 1-up. Back held a 1-up lead through 13 holes before Garcia Poggio won the next two holes to go 1-up with just three holes left. Back evened the match with a par on No. 16 and then the pair matched pars on the final two holes to tie the match and give Arizona win as a team.
 
The final match of the day also came down to the end, before Julia Misemer was able to hit some dazzling iron shots to close out the match 2&1 and posted seven birdies on her round.
 
Arizona is back in action at the Stanford Intercollegiate on Oct. 17-19 at the Stanford Golf Course.
