WWE champion Cody Rhodes has always had good things to say about Arn Anderson — before, during, and after their run together on-screen in AEW. Then, in the build-up to his’ title defense in Saudi Arabia last month, Rhodes got people talking when he mused about getting a “classic wrestling manager” to help him out during his title reign.
Could that lead to a reunion of Double-A and the American Nightmare back in WWE, where Anderson is not only a Hall of Famer but also spent decades working behind-the-scenes?
Arn addressed that while on Busted Open yesterday (June 7). Just as he did when he announced he was leaving AEW, Anderson said his focus is on helping his son Brock take his career to the next level. Beyond that, it was a very “never say never” kind of answer.
“… would I come back in the right situation for a short-term something with Cody? If anybody out there thinks it’s a good idea, let me know — I don’t know.
“That would be something because he and I never had that conversation, and after that thing blew up just a couple weeks ago or whenever it was coming off you guys’ show, that blew up and it was like, okay, ‘He’s coming back…’
“And I sent him a text and his wife has been ill, asked how she was, asked how he was, ‘Everything going okay?’ And we had a couple of texts back-and-forth and it never came up.
“So I went, ‘Maybe that was just him testing waters himself, when he threw that out there.’ I’m not sure. I was honored and flattered of the things he said, but it’s all true and that’s the way I handle Cody. ‘Hey, you’re the star of the show. Go out there and act like one.’”
At this point, it doesn’t seem like Rhodes needs someone to remind him he’s the star of the show. Personal preferences about his character or qualms about his booking aside, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn’t think Cody’s settled into the “face of WWE” role nicely.
That doesn’t mean something “short-term” with the Enforcer wouldn’t be fun. Heck, now that WWE isn’t strictly PG in the new era, maybe he can even bring his Glock…
