Authorities in Georgia said they are investigating the death of a 4-year-old boy after he was found in a hot car.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that officers responded to the Summer Trace Apartment Complex on West Turner Street in Metter for a report of missing child Kameron Jamel Williams.
At the scene, both officers and family members performed a search of the area until a relative found the child inside the vehicle at the complex.
“The preliminary investigation reveals that Kameron walked out of the apartment and began playing outside,” authorities said. “A nearby camera captured a person, presumably Kameron, entering the car and remaining inside.”
Candler County Coroner Jamie Anderson told PEOPLE on Monday, June 30, that his office was notified of a report of the child found in a hot car. Williams was pronounced deceased at 1:59 p.m., local time.
According to the Weather Channel, the temperature in Metter on June 22 reached a high of 93 degrees.
Authorities said that Kameron’s body was transported to the GBI Coastal Crime Lab Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. The autopsy results are currently pending.
PEOPLE contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Metter Police Department for additional information on Monday. The GBI said in its news release that once the investigation is finished, the case file will be presented to the Middle Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
According to the National Safety Council (NSC), there have been 25 child hot car deaths reported so far this year. In 2024, there were a total of 39.
