Cardinal Splits Day Two of MPSF Invitational – Stanford Cardinal

LOS ANGELES – The No. 4 Cardinal moved to 7-1 on the season today, topping No. 7 Long Beach State in overtime, but dropping the team’s first game of the season to No. 1 UCLA.

The Card fell behind early, trailing 5-2 after the first period and 7-6 at halftime. A big third period put Stanford ahead 11-8 heading into the fourth, but Long Beach was able to rally and send the game into overtime at 13-13.

Six goals in overtime gave Stanford the win, sending the team to the afternoon’s semifinal against No. 1 UCLA. West Temkin made a season-high 12 saves in the win, while the Cardinal offense saw massive performances from Ben Forer (six goals), Gianpiero Di Martire (four goals) and Max Zelikov (four goals).

Stanford fell just short in the second game of the day, falling 13-12 to the hosting Bruins. Balogh, Zelikov and Will Schneider led the way for Stanford, each recording a hat trick in the loss. Temkin made eight saves in the team’s first loss of the season.

The Card will play in the tournament’s third-place game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. PT, taking on No. 2 USC. The game will be streamed on Overnght and played at UCLA’s Spieker Aquatics Center.
