President Trump will posthumously award Kirk the Medal of Freedom at a White House ceremony this evening. The president said Kirk’s wife, Erika, would be at the East Room event.
Sen. Rick Scott’s resolution honors Charlie Kirk
Today, Oct. 14, has been designated as a National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk.
Sen. Rick Scott of Florida submitted a resolution in September calling for the designation and it was passed by the Senate.
A similar bill in the House was referred to a committee, where it remains.
“Charlie dedicated his life to the idea that the power of our ideas can not only win the day, but start a movement. That’s exactly what he did,” Scott said.
“Charlie was never afraid to have a discussion. He didn’t care if you agreed or disagreed with his ideas. He welcomed the opportunity to respectfully and peacefully debate ideas in the court of public opinion.
“Charlie was taken from us in a disgusting act of political violence on Sept. 10, 2025, but his legacy lives on.
“As we mourn this massive loss, let us gather together in our communities and pray for his family and our nation. And let us honor Charlie by believing in the power of our ideas to win the day and leave the nation a better place.
“I am proud to have the support of more than 20 of my colleagues to honor Charlie by dedicating his birthday – Oct. 14, 2025 – as “National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk.”
What did Senate Resolution 403 say about Charlie Kirk?
Senate Resolution 403 urged that Oct. 14, 2025, be designated as a National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk, who would have been 32 on that date.
“Charlie Kirk was a champion of free speech, civil dialogue, and faith and consistently promoted the values of individual liberty, open debate, the importance of civic engagement, and the defense of constitutional principles,” the resolution said.
“Kirk’s life’s work has contributed to strengthening public discourse, defending constitutional principles, and fostering active citizenship … and cost him his life by means of an assassin’s bullet.”
By declaring Oct. 14 and a National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk, the resolution:
- Recognizes Charlie Kirk for his contributions to civic education and public service, and
- Encourages educational institutions, civic organizations, and citizens across the United States to observe this day with appropriate programs, activities, prayers, and ceremonies that promote civic engagement and the principles of faith, liberty, and democracy that Charlie Kirk championed.

House bill to honor Charlie Kirk languishes in committee
A similar bill in the House — House Resolution 727 — to designate today as a National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk was sponsored by Rep. Patronis of Florida.
Also introduced in September, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, where it remains.
Candlelight vigil to be held at Florida Capitol for Charlie Kirk
A candlelight vigil for Kirk will be held at the Florida Capitol in Tallahassee today to commemorate and pay respects to Kirk. The vigil is expected to start around 6 p.m. and go to 9 p.m.
Bill filed to make Oct. 14 Charlie Kirk Day of Remembrance every year in Florida
House Bill 125 was filed Oct. 8 in the Florida House of Representatives to designate Oct. 14 of each year as Charlie Kirk Day of Remembrance.
If passed by the Legislature during the 2026 session, effective date proposed in the bill is July 1, 2026.
“Charlie Kirk reached millions of Americans, including Floridians of all ages, encouraging them to take part in civic life and defend constitutional freedoms,” the bill said.
“Kirk’s tragic death on Sept. 10, 2025, was not only a national loss but also deeply felt within Florida’s civic and educational communities.”
Trump reacts to Florida bill to set ongoing Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk
In a post on Facebook, Trump reacted to the proposed bill.
“The Florida Legislature is now considering a new law designating EVERY YEAR, October 14th, as Charlie Kirk Day of Remembrance.
“That’s Charlie’s birthday.
“Florida is also renaming roads in honor of Charlie.
“Charlie Kirk is honored for his contributions to free speech, open debate, civic education, youth leadership, and the advancement of individual liberties, which left a lasting impact on this state’s students and civic organizations…”
“Charlie Kirk’s tragic death on September 10, 2025, was not only a national loss but also deeply felt within Florida’s civic and educational communities.”

Today is Charlie Kirk’s birthday. Who was Charlie Kirk?
Conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, 31, was killed Sept. 10, 2025, while speaking in Orem, Utah, at Utah Valley University.
He didn’t have a college degree. But the conservative built what he called “the largest pro-American student organization in the country,” Turning Point USA, over the last decade.
At a Turning Point political rally in December 2024, a month after winning the presidential election, Donald Trump credited Kirk and Turning Point with his victory.
Kirk gained fame as a vocal critic of liberalism in education.
Kirk has been credited for inspiring and rallying young conservatives to fight (and vote) for personal freedom against what he called dangerous liberal ideas and seeking to open communications with his public debates, but he also outraged millions with his hard-line views on abortion, civil rights, gender issues, gay marriage and gun rights.
Bill would make Florida colleges, universities name streets after Charlie Kirk
A Florida lawmaker has filed a bill — HB 113 — requiring all Florida public state universities and colleges to rename one of the roads on their campuses after slain conversative activist Charlie Kirk.
There would be consequences if they don’t.

HB 113 proposes holding back “state funds” if a campus road is not renamed after Kirk.
A bullet fired from a nearby rooftop struck Kirk’s neck as he was speaking. Prosecutors charged 22-year-old Utah resident Tyler Robinson with murder, along with other counts.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is considered the U.S. government’s highest civilian honor.
Awarded by the president, it is often presented to individuals to recognize a lifetime of significant achievements in the arts, public service, science, or other fields, according congress.gov.
Executive Order 11085 of February 1963, allows the president to recognize “any person who has made an especially meritorious contribution to:
- the security or national interests of the United States.
- world peace, or
- cultural or other significant public or private endeavors
Between 1963 and 2025, the Presidential Medal of Freedom was awarded 673 times to 670 individuals and one group —the Apollo 13 Mission Operations Team. Ellsworth Bunker and Colin Powell received the medal twice.
