Dwayne Johnson may have dominated his role in a gritty MMA drama, but behind the scenes, he was shooting his shot at something far more high fashion.

While filming The Smashing Machine with Emily Blunt, Johnson revealed he pitched himself for a role in the upcoming sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2. During an appearance on Entertainment Weekly’s Awardist podcast, Johnson said he floated the idea directly to Blunt between scenes.

“I pitched myself. I told her while she was shooting,” he recalled. Blunt quickly added, “He tried.”

Blunt also joked that if Johnson did join the cast, he’d naturally play someone “who knows fashion” and “is cool,” throwing in that he’d have to be “great at walking in heels.” Johnson fired back with his own punchline, “Size 15 heels.”

The conversation comes as anticipation builds for the follow-up to the 2006 fashion-world classic starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Blunt. The long-awaited sequel, set for release on May 1, 2026, brings back much of the original cast, including Stanley Tucci, Tracie Thoms, and Tibor Feldman, with David Frankel returning to direct.

The sequel also features a stacked roster of new faces, including Kenneth Branagh, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, and Simone Ashley. Lady Gaga was also recently confirmed to have a small role in the film.

Despite plot details remaining tightly guarded, Blunt praised the script by returning screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, but refused to share anything about the story or even where her character Emily Charlton stands after the events of the first film.

Johnson, however, was more open about the frenzy surrounding production, recounting how Blunt sent him videos of massive crowds gathering around the New York City set and saying “It was wild. Like, pop star level sighting.”
