The rise in hate speech and misinformation on X, formerly known as Twitter, since Elon Musk’s acquisition has been a concerning trend. Reports indicate that hate speech, defined as content promoting discrimination or violence based on race, religion, and other identity factors, has increased noticeably, with studies suggesting a roughly 50% rise in such content in the months following Musk’s takeover. This surge can be attributed to Musk’s “free speech” advocacy and changes in moderation policies that have reduced protections for marginalized groups and reinstated banned accounts known for instigating controversial discussions. Such measures have inadvertently created an environment where harmful narratives thrive, impacting the platform’s discourse quality and user safety. According to a study by Berkeley News, these shifts have not only fueled more toxic exchanges but have also pressured advertisers to reconsider their spending on the platform. Thus, while aiming to create a more open dialogue, the leniency in content moderation has intensified the spread of divisive and inaccurate information, challenging the credibility of dialogues surrounding political and societal issues.
