Getting to Know Florida – The Nature Coast
Our beautiful state is a great place to live with unique resources and varied lifestyles as you move around the state. In this series, we’ll look at the characteristics of Florida’s Nature Coast – located in the northwest part of the state.
Old Florida Charm
The Nature Coast is located on the west coast or “Gulf” side, north of the Tampa Bay area. It is known for “old Florida” charm. This part of the sunshine state is home to clear springs, quiet rivers and star-filled nights. The lifestyle pace is slow and outdoorsy. Live Oaks drape over river banks providing shade and shelter for wildlife. Kayaks glide through peaceful waters passing Manatee. There is a strong fishing and boating culture here. The scallop season which starts July 1st, draws “scallopers” from around the state. Looking for fresh seafood? Go by boat or car to Shelly’s Seafood Market on the Homosassa River.
Have you ever seen a mermaid? You can watch the mermaids swim on the Nature Coast in Spring Hill at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park. In 2007, underwater explorers discovered new passages in the spring’s cave system and found Weeki Wachee has the deepest known freshwater cave system in the United States.
