The hot sunny weather may have returned but when it comes to fashion, it’s time to talk autumn. New collections have already landed in your favourite stores meaning that now – not once the weather turns and key items have sold out – is the time to shop.

Here’s what you’re looking for: transitional pieces that you can start wearing now but will also see you through once autumn arrives in full force.

These are my suggestions for smart investments pieces that will give your wardrobe an instant, and youthful, upgrade and get you all set for September and beyond – as well as the trends you’ll want to steer clear of…

Adaptable A-line skirts

The antidote to summer’s floaty boho maxis? An elegant, easy-to-wear A-line. This skirt works just as well during the summer months as it will come September. Try it with sandals now, switch to trainers in autumn, and then knee-high boots when temperatures drop.

This will be one of the most versatile purchases you ever make. This colourful printed number from John Lewis, £120, is great fun – and will add a youthful touch to your autumn wardrobe. When it comes to wearability, they don’t get better than this navy cotton-blend knit from Zara, £55.99, with an elasticated waist (bliss) and elegantly flared hem.

Be a fashion slouch

Practicality reigned supreme when it came to accessories on the AW catwalks. This slouchy maxi-shoulder bag was the antithesis of the rigid, ladylike shapes we’ve seen in recent years. Acne, Stella McCartney and Fendi all showcased versions – clutches, and cross-bodies in soft, supple leather and suede which were carried folded up or slung loosely over the shoulder.

With their unstructured, easy to carry shapes, these bags boast and effortlessly cool appeal and, unlike other styles, are actually roomy enough to hold all necessities. I’ll be treating myself to this suede tan design from Mango, only £59.99. Blue leather, £98, anthropologie.com

Stylishly simple silk

Give your wardrobe an instant refresh with a classic printed scarf. It’s no surprise that resale platform Depop has seen searches for silk scarves increase by 41 per cent this year. It requires minimal effort and the possibilities are endless – as well as wearing as a bandana I’ll be knotting the larger styles over my waist as a belt – easy outfit update! The effect should be laissez-faire. Go for natural fibres, that are built to last. Pink cotton square, £20, oliverbonas.com. Orange and res triangle, £55, toa.st.

The cardi is cool again

A good knit can transform an outfit and what you want to be investing in this season is a traditional cardi (thank you Miu Miu for making them less granny and more Gen Z). Bright green, cobalt blue, eye-catching red – go for something colourful and it will transform your entire wardrobe.

If your outfit is otherwise understated, this is an easy and practical way to add a little excitement. The silhouette? Oversized. It’ll be good for all weathers, whether you’re pulling it on over a vest or throwing an extra layer under your coat. Cardigan, £68.60, boden.com.

Brave a barrel-cut jean

They may be a little intimidating but the jean style you want to be snapping up is the barrel. Distinguished by their curved, voluminous leg that tapers back in at the ankle, the barrel – also known as ‘horseshoe’ – entered the fashion scene courtesy of Alaïa’s AW23 show, and they’ve been steadily growing in popularity ever since. In fact, they’ve been so popular that M&S has introduced two fresh colourways for autumn/winter. Take your cue from Bottega Veneta and wear yours with your flannel shirt for a relaxed weekend look. Indigo denim, £29.50, marksandspencer.com. Ecru, £100, hush-uk.com

Pick up some plaid

Plaid lives on the outskirts of the trend cycle, a safe bet, never out but never quite in. Until now that is. The Row and Bottega Veneta have given it a fresh spin for AW25 and it should now be top of your shopping list. One check shirt myth to bust is that it always looks casual.

Not true. Wear this grey design from Massimo (only £25.95 in the sale) tucked into tailored trousers for an office appropriate outfit. Personally, I’ll be going for a thicker brushed cotton design, like this from Fat Face, £49.50, and knotting it around my waist with jeans and a simple white T-shirt until summer is officially over.

Three to avoid…

Take it from me, these style revivals for autumn are definitely not ones to add to basket…

1. Statement Shoulder: The eighties had plenty of fashion moments, but oversized, padded shoulders don’t need a comeback – there are sleeker ways to dress with confidence.

2. Faux fur: When it’s covering everything from coats to shoes, it stops feeling stylish and starts to look like overkill, possibly roadkill.

3. Underwear as outerwear: A little lace or satin peeking out from under knitwear or a blazer can be chic, but full-on lingerie worn solo in autumn feels more impractical than edgy.
