Leon County Clerk of Courts responds to ‘neglect of duty’ claims in letter to Florida Supreme Court
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Leon County Clerk of Courts has responded nearly two weeks after the Chief Judge for Florida’s Second Judicial Circuit reported the office to the Florida Supreme Court, claiming “neglect of duty.”
The judge alleged the clerk neglected their duties, and claimed delays and errors are impacting court and jail proceedings.
County Clerk of Court Gwen Knight denied those accusations in a letter to Florida Supreme Court Justice, saying mistakes do happen, but they are caught and corrected.
“As with any entity, however, mistakes are sometimes made. Where mistakes are made, steps are taken to ensure that they aren’t likely to recur. That’s what’s happening now in the Leon County Clerk’s Office,” the letter says.
The letter goes on to say the initial complaint never said the office is not following the law.
The response also says the clerk of the court office is facing funding and staffing issues that contribute to current issues.
“Those issues are uniquely affecting the Leon County Clerk’s Office. The office is forced to do more with less,” the letter says.
The letter ends by assuring the state justices that the office has worked to fix the issues addressed in the complaint.
The letter also cites “recent constructive dialogue between the chief judge and clerk,” which happened at the end of July.
