Lufthansa cancels hundreds of flights due to pilot strike

Lufthansa Airlines cancelled close to 800 flights on Thursday (12 February) after pilots and cabin crew in Germany called a 24-hour strike action over a pay dispute.

Some 100,000 travellers were reportedly affected following “extensive cancellations” across the German airline’s route network.

German pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) and cabin crew union UFO called for the labour action, which began at 12:01am on Thursday and is scheduled to last until 11:59 pm. Lufthansa pilots last went on strike in 2022, resulting in the cancellation of 800 flights by the carrier.

Flight operations at Lufthansa’s main hubs in Frankfurt and Munich have faced disruption. The strike is occurring just a day before world leaders are expected to arrive for the Munich Security Conference.

The carrier said affected travellers can rebook flights “free of charge” or have their ticket refunded. For domestic flights, Lufthansa said travellers can exchange their air ticket for a Deutsche Bahn ticket free of charge.

The airline anticipates resuming its normal flight schedule on Friday, 13 February.

Lufthansa’s flagship carrier has experienced financial challenges in recent years and is currently undergoing a “turnaround” restructuring process following a series of disruptive strikes in 2024 and operational inefficiencies.
