An investigation is underway after a man is suspected of shooting at several traffic cameras and then causing a pursuit that ended with a fiery crash in Carson City.

Deputies say they initially responded to reports of gunshots in multiple locations in south Carson City just before 1:15 a.m. on Saturday.

A suspect car was located in the area and after a pursuit lasting several miles, the suspect crashed his car, resulting in a fire.

Deputies say the suspect, identified as 46-year-old Kerry Benson, was caught on camera shooting at city-owned camera systems along Fairview Drive from Roop Street to South Edmonds.

Two of the incidents caused the camera lithium batteries to catch fire.

Shortly after, Benson was found near Sonoma Street near Carson Street where he initially drove away from deputies. The pursuit continued through south Carson City, then east to Carson River Road at Pinion Hills Drive where his car overturned and caught fire.

Benson was taken into custody and transported by Care Flight for leg and head injuries.

No one else was hurt.

The camera shooting incident is being investigated by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, while the crash investigation is being managed by the Nevada State Police.

The matter is under continued investigation.
