We’re now on the other side of NFL free agency, and while the initial wave of signings has settled, the league is far from quiet. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen major roster moves, depth charts reshaped, and teams begin to show their hand heading into the NFL Draft.
This stretch of the calendar can be just as deceptive. Free agency may feel like the “big movement” period, but in reality, it’s only part of the puzzle. Teams have filled some needs, exposed others, and set themselves up for what’s to come in the draft. The ripple effects from these moves are still playing out.
For dynasty managers, this is one of the most critical windows of the offseason. Roles are becoming clearer, but not fully locked in. Value is shifting, but not fully corrected. This creates a unique opportunity to act before the draft reshapes depth charts and spikes (or tanks) player value.
Some of the best dynasty moves happen right here, in between free agency and the draft, when the market is still catching up to reality.
So with that in mind, let’s dive into the latest NFL developments, and more importantly, what they mean for dynasty teams moving forward.
The Denver Broncos didn’t wait for the draft; they went out and got their guy. Denver sends a first, third, and fourth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Jaylen Waddle, making it clear they believe he’s the missing piece for Bo Nix and this offense. This is a big swing and honestly, one I’m buying into more than most.
The Broncos needed a real difference-maker at receiver. Courtland Sutton has been solid, but he’s not someone who tilts coverage. The rest of the room, Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims Jr., Pat Bryant, flashed, but none of them forced defenses to adjust.
Waddle does. This is exactly the type of player Sean Payton has been trying to find. Someone who can win quickly, separate vs man, and create easy completions for his quarterback. And that’s where this gets interesting. Waddle has been one of the more efficient receivers in the league the past few years, even while playing in an offense where he wasn’t the focal point. He wasn’t getting the easy, schemed touches. He wasn’t the primary option. And he still produced.
Now? That changes. In Denver, Waddle is going to move all over the formation. He’s not just going to be an outside receiver; he’s going to be used on crossers, motioned into space, and given opportunities to create after the catch. That’s a big deal for Nix.
One of Nix’s biggest issues last year was consistency downfield and creating explosive plays. Waddle immediately raises the ceiling of this passing game, both underneath and vertically. This is the best weapon Nix has had, and it’s not close.
For the Dolphins, this is a reset. They move off Waddle, pick up premium draft capital, and likely look to retool through the draft. The offense had already taken a step back, and this signals they’re willing to pivot. There’s not a ton of dynasty takeaway here outside of opportunity opening up, but the bigger story is clearly on the Denver side.
I think I’m going to be ahead of consensus on Waddle here. He’s a really good player. The efficiency has always been there. The ability to beat man coverage is there. The question has always been role. Now he finally gets one that fits. That said, I’m not going to go too far.
Waddle has shown us who he is at this point: a high-end WR2. Expecting a jump into that elite WR1 tier might be a stretch, especially with Sutton still commanding targets and the offense likely spreading the ball around. But this move absolutely raises his floor and gives him a path to more consistent production. For dynasty, this is pretty simple: If you can still get Waddle at a WR2 price, I’m buying.
If the market pushes him into WR1 territory, I’m probably out. This feels like a strong landing spot, just not one that completely changes who he is as a fantasy asset. If you can get a mid- to early-2027 first for him, I’d be selling all day at that price.
