Denver Broncos free agent safety P.J. Locke is leaving the team to join the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple reports.
Locke’s one-year deal is worth $5 million, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Denver wanted to re-sign the safety, but he preferred an opportunity to start in Dallas, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. He will now reunite with Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who served as the Broncos’ defensive backs coach from 2021-2023.
Locke (5-10, 202 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Texas with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019. After failing to make Pittsburgh’s 53-man roster, Locke joined Denver’s practice squad in December of his rookie season.
Locke went on to serve as a special teams player from 2020-2022 before emerging as an eight-game fill-in starter in 2023. He followed that up by starting 15 games in 2024 before the team brought in Talanoa Hufanga in 2025. Last year, Locke started three games in the place of an injured Brandon Jones.
The 29-year-old safety totaled 174 tackles, 11 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, four sacks and one interception in six seasons (90 games) in Denver. He will now get a fresh start in Dallas going into his eighth year in the NFL while the Broncos move forward with Hufanga and Jones.
