WASHINGTON D.C., DC — President Donald Trump is ordering the flags at all government buildings, including the White House, to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Sunday, Aug. 31, to honor the victims in Wednesday’s mass shooting at a south Minneapolis church.
As part of the order, Trump said flags at all military posts and naval stations, all naval vessels, embassies, legations, consular offices and other facilities abroad will also fly flags at half-staff as a “mark of respect for the victims of the senseless act of violence,” the order reads.
Gov. Tim Walz also ordered flags to fly at half-staff at all state buildings, as well.
“Minnesota is heartbroken by the senseless shooting that took place this morning,” said Walz in a statement. “I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence. To the officers and first responders, the clergy and teachers providing comfort, and the hospital staff saving lives – thank you. We will get through this together.”
Minneapolis Police say the shooting occurred just before 8:30 a.m. at Annunciation Catholic Church on West 54th Street in Minneapolis.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said a worship service marking the first week of school was happening when a shooter outside the building started firing through the windows. O’Hara said the shooter was armed with a rifle, a shotgun and a pistol.
Two children were killed, and 17 other people, including 14 kids, were injured.
HCMC confirmed that 10 patients were being treated, including six kids who were in critical condition and two with non-life-threatening injuries. One adult was also in critical condition. Children’s Minnesota said seven children between the ages of 9-16 were admitted, and four have been discharged.
“I have been fully briefed on the tragic shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota,” Trump posted on Truth Social Wednesday morning. “The FBI quickly responded and they are on the scene. The White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation. Please join me in praying for everyone involved!”
