Rowing Finishes Opening Day of Rocky Top Invite Friday

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The University of Minnesota rowing team completed the opening day of racing at the second annual Rocky Top Invite Friday from Oak Ridge, Tenn.
 
Competing at Melton Hill Lake, the Golden Gophers battled against some of the nation’s top rowing programs in their first official action of the spring championship season. Minnesota turned in a pair of third-place efforts and finished in fourth place three times among the five competing boats.
 
The Maroon and Gold turned in third-place efforts in both heats of the Third Varsity Fours and Second Varsity Fours with times of 7:40.544 and 7:50.310, respectively, to start the day. Minnesota’s next two crews each placed fourth as the First Varsity Fours covered the 2,000-meter course in 7:30.871 and the Second Varsity Eights raced to a time of 6:49.505.
 
In the final action of the evening, the First Varsity Eights were edged at the finish by Iowa as the rivals crossed the finish line by a half second before the Gophers.

Coach Strodel’s Comments

“It was a great effort from all our boats today. We have a lot to work on, but it was encouraging to see how competitive we were with some of the best teams in the country,” Head Coach Alicea Strodel said.

Minnesota will close its trip to the Volunteer State on Saturday as it races in two sessions, starting with the semifinal heats at 7 a.m. (CT). The last action of the weekend is set to begin at 11 a.m. (CT) when the nine teams battle in the finals.
