On the heels of being the production hub for the second season of the hit HBO show The Last of Us, Vancouver is reportedly set to be home to a shoot for another major series based on a video game.
According to reports from several well-connected tech and gaming publications, God of War, a new Amazon series based on a hugely popular PlayStation video game, will be filmed in Vancouver.
If the reports are accurate, filming is expected to begin next spring, but some additional information has been revealed about the show.
The first publication to suggest that the series would be filmed in Vancouver was Nexus Point News in a report published two days ago.
“The series will begin filming in March 2026 in Vancouver, sources tell Nexus Point News,” the report stated.
A listing hasn’t yet been made public on Creative BC or the UBCP/ACTRA production lists. Still, we’ve reached out to several agencies, including Amazon, PlayStation, and Creative BC, to confirm the reports.
Daily Hive obtained a suggestive statement from the City of Vancouver regarding the potential Vancouver shoot.
“Due to confidentiality, security and safety considerations, the City does not comment on specific film or television productions that are currently working in Vancouver. While we can’t confirm details, we’re excited to see Vancouver continue to be a top choice for filmmakers from around the world,” the statement reads.
Even without direct confirmation, if you’ve played the 2018 PlayStation 4 video game God of War, B.C. and Vancouver are a perfect fit for some of the environments that are depicted in the game, which is what the series is reportedly going to be based on. The video game features lush natural landscapes, including forests and mountainous regions. There are also large bodies of water that you traverse through, which make up a significant portion of the adventure.
For anyone who hasn’t experienced the 2018 game, the story is based on Norse mythology in the realm of Midgard. The protagonists include Kratos, who, in previous games in the franchise, was known as the Greek God of War. Those prior games in the series are set in Greek mythology, featuring battles against Gods like Poseidon, Zeus and Ares.
The 2018 game features Norse figures like Baldr (son of Odin) and the sons of Thor, Modi and Magni.
The second protagonist is Kratos’s son, Atreus, and much of the story revolves around the pair’s complex and evolving relationship, with some parallels to the relationship between Joel and Ellie in The Last of Us.
A sequel to the 2018 game, entitled God of War: Ragnarok (2022), could potentially serve as a follow-up to the first season, much like The Last of Us, which is based on the sequel to the original game.
While no casting details have been released, Ronald D. Moore has reportedly been named as the showrunner and has been previously linked to shows like Outlander, Battlestar Galactica, and Star Trek.
While the Nexus Point News report doesn’t specifically state Vancouver, B.C., it’s unlikely that the series will be filmed in Vancouver, Washington.
No offence, Washington friends.
