The charging capability is aligned with Tesla’s recently announced V4 Cabinet architecture, which is designed to work with vehicle systems operating between 400 to 1,000 volts. While the system can deliver up to 500 kW for vehicles like the Cybertruck, it is optimized for the Semi to handle up to 1.2 MW, making it one of the most potent electric vehicle charging setups ever demonstrated in real-world conditions.

The advanced thermal management system is also noteworthy. The video demonstrates a liquid-cooled charging cable coupled with an immersion-cooled connector that managed to support the extreme current without any observable issues. This technology is part of Tesla’s high-power proprietary Megawatt Charging System, although there is a growing trend towards compatibility with Multiple Charging Standards (MCS).

Despite the impressive peak power captured in the video, several critical details remain shrouded in mystery. The video does not indicate the truck’s state of charge during the charging session, leaving questions about at what battery percentage the Semi can achieve or maintain 1.2 MW of charging power. Moreover, while peak power readings are impressive, they do not fully convey charging performance as the real metric lies in how long that power can be sustained before heat management necessitates a reduction in output.

Based on Tesla’s claimed energy efficiency of 1.7 kWh per mile and considering the estimated 850 kWh battery, a charge from 10 to 80 percent could theoretically take less than 45 minutes—assuming minimal power tapering occurs.

As the company gears up to scale Semi production, they are expanding facilities near Gigafactory Nevada to support increased output. Tesla plans to commence production in the first half of 2026, with ambitions to ramp up to full operational capacity by the latter half of the year. If the demonstrated charging performance can be replicated in real-world applications, the Tesla Semi has the potential to eradicate one of the most considerable challenges facing electric long-haul trucking.
