Thanksgiving travel appears on track to be a record-breaker

MILWAUKEE — Any additional economic fears these days won’t be on display across America and here in Wisconsin next week when it comes to Thanksgiving-related travel, which AAA now says is on track for an all-time record.

“It is going to be another big one,” said Nick Jarmusz, the director of public affairs for AAA Wisconsin. “In fact, we expect a record-breaking volume of people who are going to be traveling around the country for the holiday, and we’re really expecting that to kick off in earnest next Tuesday.”

AAA anticipates that roughly 82 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home next week with the vast majority. Nearly 73 million will hit the country’s highways and byways, which may be a few more than before the FAA recently scaled back flights nationwide because of the government shutdown.

“We were anticipating that air travel was going to be up pretty significant this year and we still anticipate it’ll be bigger than last year,” Jarmusz said. “There may be some folks scared off by air travel because of what we saw with the delays and cancellations that we saw, and there may still be some bumps in the road.”
