Let’s cut to the chase: How the hell will 2024 live up to last year’s slate of video games? If you don’t believe 2023 was the best year the medium has ever seen—Alan Wake! Baldur’s Gate 3! The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom—then you have to admit, at least, that it was one of the best.
Oh, you didn’t finish one of the 100-plus-hour titles from last year? Sorry, friend—the gaming world stops for no one. It’s time to start looking ahead to the next wave of titles. January and February are full of big releases, with The Last of Us Pt. II Remastered and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth out soon. From there, we’ll likely see an open-world Star Wars game, Elden Ring DLC, and another go-round with Mario.
So fire up your console of choice—here are our most anticipated video games of 2024.
The Last of Us Pt. II Remastered (January 19)
Platform: PlayStation 5
For those who want to relive the harrowing events of The Last of Us Pt. II, an official remastered version will debut in late January. The new release comes with the original’s DLC and a “roguelike survival mode” with random encounters, called “No Return.” If you already own the original Pt. II, it will also only cost you $10 to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 edition.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (January 26)
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Retitling from Yakuza to Like a Dragon, Infinite Wealth will attempt to bridge the violent (yet lighthearted!) games with a dual storyline for both the legendary Kazuma Kiryu and the latest protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga. Full of whimsical fights, minigames galore, and Animal Crossing-esque island maintenance, Infinite Wealth will be so full of content that late-night karaoke sessions will have you forgetting your next objective.

Tekken 8 (January 26)
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Tekken 8 is the first game in the celebrated fighting series since 2015’s Tekken 7. In nearly a decade since the last Tekken release, the Bandai Namco team has worked to become the first studio to power a major fighting title with the graphical improvements of Unreal Engine 5. Bandai also engineered a new “Heat State” gameplay system that its hopes will make Tekken 8 the best fighting game of the year.

Persona 3 Reload (February 2)

Persona 3 Reload may just be a remake of 2006’s Persona 3, but the remastered version’s improved graphics and slick character designs will surely highlight why it was such an influential title in the development of the fan-favorite RPG series.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League (February 2)

The follow-up to 2018’s Batman: Arkham Knight will follow DC Comics antiheroes Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark as they’re sent on a mission through an open-world Metropolis to kill Brainiac and the brainwashed Justice League members.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong (February 16)
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Mario vs. Donkey Kong—which is the fifth entry in the puzzle-platforming series—looks like a spiritual successor to the original Donkey Kong arcade title. Skull and Bones (February 16)

Skull and Bones is the next pirate adventure game from Ubisoft, the studio that brought you Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry. The game promises to be a complete adventure on the high seas, including the ability to form a vast crew, compete in naval warfare, and hunt giant sea creatures.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (February 29)

If you’re not a Final Fantasy obsessive, please feel free to move right along and save yourself the headache. Still here? Good. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the sequel to 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake, which itself—it’s in the name—is a remake of 1997’s Final Fantasy VII. It’s a lot! We know. But for a hell of a lot of gamers, this is by far their most anticipated title of the year.

Alone in the Dark (March 20)

Alone in the Dark is yet another remastered title! Remasters and remakes are all the rage in the video game world, following successes such as the Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space reworks. The refreshed 1992 survival horror game will borrow from Resident Evil by switching to an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective.

Rise of the Ronin (March 22)

There have been a fair share of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice clones since FromSoftware’s 2019 title was the near-unanimous Game of the Year. Rise of the Ronin, from the developers of Ninja Gaiden, hopefully has some more juice to it than its competitors. The flame sword in the trailer just about sells me entirely.

Based on the famous Chinese novel Journey to the West, Black Myth: Wukong will have players control a warrior monkey who fights massive mystical beasts. It looks like boss-fight heaven—and a soulslike with fast-paced action and terrifying monster design.

Animal Well will be the first platformer promoted by BigMode—YouTuber Jason Gastrow’s (AKA videogamedunkey) new video game publisher. The Metroidvania-inspired title will focus on exploration and puzzle-solving, as players control a blob who explores a labyrinth full of animals.

Vin Diesel (!) is set to star in Ark 2, the sequel to 2015’s action-survival title, Ark: Survival Evolved. Players have yet to see any gameplay since the first cinematic trailer announcement in 2020, but the Horizon Forbidden West-like graphics will surely draw in fans by the time the game finally arrives.

Avowed (TBA)

The Outer Worlds was one of 2019’s best action role-playing games. Avowed, the studio’s next title, is seemingly their take on Skyrim. Avowed will also take place in the Pillars of Eternity universe, which fans of Obsidian Entertainment may recognize as the spiritual successor to the original Baldur’s Gate series.

Foamstars is PlayStation’s clear competitor to Nintendo’s successful Splatoon series. The game will feature third person-shooter battles, where players will hit each other with foam guns that also create slippery surfaces. Sounds fun, if that’s your thing!

Ghost Bike will bring a cycling simulator to players in 2024, with beautiful, cel-shaded art. Though haven’t seen any official gameplay, the cycling sim could easily end up being one of the most gorgeous titles of the year.

Since the success of 2020’s Hades, the number of roguelikes in the medium has seemingly tripled. At the same time, it’s tough to say that any competitors have truly come close to the greatness of Hades. That’s why we’re all waiting for Hades 2, the sequel to the hit indie game that will hopefully capitalize and improve upon the killer first entry.

Hyper Light Breaker (TBA)

I fell in love with 2016’s Hyper Light Drifter, an indie action game that combined 8-bit graphics with smooth and quick swordplay. Developer Alx Preston famously launched the game via a Kickstarter campaign that asked for $27,000 and received $600,000 in response. It made Hyper Light Drifter an incredible, indie-game success story. Hyper Light Breaker, the open-world 3D follow-up, may very well be Preston’s magnum opus.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl (TBA)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl is actually the fourth title in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, which is the exact kind of confusion that happens in the video-game industry. Chernobyl is the first title in the first-person zombie survival shooter series since 2009’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat. The latest entry from the Ukrainian-based studio has remained in development even through the Russo-Ukrainian War.
