The professional wrestling is in general comprised of two sets of roles among the performers. The first one is the face wrestlers, who are cheered by the fans and are basically the ‘good guys’ in the company, while the second one is the heel characters, who are despised by the fans and are basically the ‘bad guys’ in the company. There are a few superstars who play the same role for the entirety of their career without switching sides, but typically, a superstar will switch his character multiple times in their career, as per the situation and the storylines they are involved in demands. The step of switching sides is known as the turn, and to get the appropriate reaction from the fans, the company or the superstar’s wish, the turn has to be timed with perfection and should not be obvious.WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment), being one of the oldest professional wrestling companies, has mastered the art of turns and has the habit of presenting it in a way that fans never see it coming.
1] Shield cracks
Ever since their WWE debut, the trio of Dean Ambros, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, together known as “The Shield,” were the hottest team on the roster. The three stood behind each other like brothers, which is why when Seth took a chair and attacked Roman and Dean to align himself with “The Authority,” every WWE fan in the arena or watching from home went silent as they just witnessed the tenure of one of the most exciting team come to an end and that too in such a dramatic way.
2] Birth of the Man
Becky Lynch, since her WWE NXT days, was looked upon as a fun-loving person who always had the backs of her friends and anyone in need. However, that all changed at the 2018 Summerslam PLE when, after losing the title match against her best friend Charlotte Flair, Lynch attacked her after the match and became a heel for the first time in her WWE career, which evidently turned her career around and took her from a mid-card wrestler to an all-time draw for the WWE.
3] Gable interrupts family reunion
When Sami Zayn won the Gauntlet match to challenge Gunther for the WWE Intercontinental title at WrestleMania 40, Chad Gable stepped up and prepared Sami mentally to score the upset, which Sami eventually did. As a sign of respect and acknowledgement for his help, Sami offered Chad a title match for the IC title at Raw. However, Gable once again failed to deliver as Sami pinned him for the win. Gable looked frustrated but accepted his loss gracefully.
4] Tribal Cheif made his presence felt
After breaking away from The Shield in 2014, WWE kept pushing Roman Reigns as the face of the company, but the decision did not sit well with the fans as they thought he was just trying to copy John Cena. However, that was all until the Summerslam of 2020, when, after his brief hiatus from the company, he returned to attack the then Universal Champion Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman after the match. Reigns aligned himself with Paul Heyman the following week, completely turning heel and giving birth to his legendary Tribal Chief gimmick.
5] The Heartbreak Kid has his first victim
A heel turn so shocking that made the superstar earn the nickname “The Heartbreak Kid”. Yes, you guessed it right, it was his heel turn on Jan 11, 1992, in the Raw episode, where the then 26-year-old Shawn Michels got his famous nickname, The Heartbreak Kid. In the segment, Shawn acted like he wanted to amend the misunderstandings of recent weeks with his tag team partner Marty Jannetty, but instead, while going for a hug, Shawn super kicked Jannetty before sending him flying through the glass door of the barber shop and starting his solo hall of Famer journey.
