Truck driver kills three passengers in crash, now faces deportation
A semitruck driver who killed three passengers in a highway collision Tuesday is charged with vehicular homicide and faces deportation.Harjinder Singh was driving north on the Florida Turnpike near mile marker 171 in St. Lucie County on Tuesday.As Singh traveled north, he made an illegal U-turn in his semitruck using an “Official Use Only” turnaround.While making the illegal U-turn, the tractor-trailer blocked all four northbound lanes. Seconds later, a minivan crashed into the left side of the tractor-trailer, killing two of the three passengers and leaving the van wedged beneath the semi.Florida Highway Patrol and St. Lucie County officials at the scene were able to remove the minivan driver from the scene and transport them to a nearby hospital.The driver was later pronounced dead.On Sunday, Florida Highway Patrol reported that Singh is charged with three counts of vehicular homicide.In the criminal investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and state troopers discovered Singh entered the country illegally in 2018.After discovering this, FHP issued an ICE detainer on Singh through federal authority given to them by the 287(g) program.Singh is under state custody as he faces all charges.
