WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — As Floridians observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 19, many state and federal services will shut down while most retailers and grocery stores continue operating as usual.
The federal holiday, which honors the late civil rights leader, has been recognized nationwide since 1983 following a 15 year advocacy effort that began shortly after Dr. King’s assassination in 1968.
Florida government offices will close for the day, including courthouses and public libraries. Federal offices, post offices, and most banks will also shut down in observance of the holiday, with no mail delivery scheduled. Florida’s public schools and universities will be closed on Monday as well, giving students across all 67 counties a long weekend.
While many agencies pause operations, most grocery stores and retailers plan to remain open. Major chains — including Publix, CVS, and Walgreens — are expected to operate, though some may adjust their hours and advise customers to check with local branches before visiting. Retailers statewide will largely follow normal business hours, ensuring residents have continued access to essential shopping.

Both UPS and FedEx will alter their operations for the holiday. UPS will not provide pickup or delivery service on Jan.19, though UPSExpressCritical will remain available for urgent shipments. FedEx will operate on a modified schedule, offering limited shipping and delivery services across the state.
