Woman accused of getting protected health information from Mobile County Health Department

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – FOX10 News has uncovered court documents that said 32-year-old Shantaya Presley called the Mobile County Health Department pretending to be someone else and was able to obtain their private medical information over the phone.

Investigators said Presley used a social media platform to reveal a woman’s medical history which caused the victim to be harassed.

Court documents said Presley called the Mobile County Health Department in Tillman’s corner while on Facebook live. So, we did some digging and found that video. In the livestream, Presley provided the victim’s name and incorrect date of birth to the healthcare employee. But the public worker corrected the right date of birth and proceeded to give the private health information.

The federal HIPAA law protects sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge. This law also says healthcare providers must take reasonable steps to verify the caller is who they say they are. Those include full name, date of birth and the last four digits of the social security number.

FOX10 News Reporter Natalie Williamson emailed, called and even went to the MCHD to find out why the employee gave out the protected health information, but the department refused to comment.

Presley is charged with doxing and identity theft.

The district attorney’s office says they made a motion to revoke Presley’s bond since she was out on other charges.

They provided this statement about this case:
